London-Based Instructor Ben Alldis Discusses His Move From Finance Into Fitness

He’s a former Private Equity Associate turned instructor, meet Ben Alldis who is on a mission to spread positive vibes and unlock potential while he’s at it.

With 2.6 million members worldwide, Peloton is where fitness, lifestyle and technology merge to form a oh-so-stylish and sweat-inducing global brand.

Having been brought into the fold two years ago, he’s the London-based ride instructor at forefront of the movement in the U.K. Here, Alldis combines his love for fitness (growing up he was an proficient athlete, so had a good foundation and passion for sports), and also music to help people train harder, faster and ultimately, become stronger. And boy, will you do that with his spin classes.

There’s more to the brand than indoor rides, there’s a whole host of classes to suit you, your needs and goals from running and stretching to yoga and full-on cardio. In fact, there has been a huge rise in trial members taking up non-bike and tread workouts, opting for strength, yoga, and meditation classes (80{554322552816a46baa129cc1ab31b2aae22be5e23f407658ace83a643d80b0e9} of them to be precise from March to April this year). And here comes another bonus, it can all be done from the comfort of your own home to suit your schedule. Ideal.

Ben discusses his journey from finance to fitness, the Peloton lifestyle and how to stay active and focused.

Felicity Carter: You worked in finance and made the jump to Peloton, how and when did that opportunity come about?

Ben Alldis: I’ve always been into fitness and played different team sports to a high level from an early age, including football, athletics, cricket and rugby. Before joining Peloton I was working in the City as a Private Equity Investment Analyst but, my passion for fitness remained strong and so I was also teaching classes at a boutique studio in my very limited spare time. On a busy week, I would teach two classes 3 days a week before work and then head straight to the office, as well as teach classes across weekends. In summer 2018, I was introduced to Peloton, when one of the instructors, Cody Rigsby, came to London to take one of my classes and to discuss a potential opportunity to join the team. After a long audition and interview process, I decided to make the jump to a full time career in the fitness industry and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I love sharing my passion for fitness and helping others achieve their personal goals. I spent the summer of 2018 training in New York City with Leanne Hainsby, who is another U.K. Cycling Instructor. We then began teaching classes in November 2018.

FC: How would you sum up the Peloton lifestyle?

BA: Peloton is a global interactive fitness platform that brings the energy and benefits of studio-style workouts to the convenience and comfort of home. We have thousands of live and on-demand classes, taught by a roster of instructors. Peloton delivers real-time motivation and curated playlists from the world’s best artists. We have a very diverse Member community across everything from geography to socio-economic level. Ultimately, our target audience is looking for a high-quality workout with a great instructor and to be motivated – and is often time-poor so appreciate the convenience of Peloton.

FC: Tell us about the Peloton technology…

BA: Peloton sits at the intersection of technology, fitness and media. The platform allows you to experience a group fitness class from the comfort of home, while being able to connect through technology with a community of people all over the world, as well as the instructors. In the U.K., you can access the content, which is produced from studios in New York and London, via the Peloton Bike or the Peloton App. Focussing on the Bike, it features performance tracking metrics and a motivating real-time leaderboard. If you’re feeling competitive you can track your metrics live versus other riders, or simply ride alongside friends from all over the world, all from the comfort of your own home. Additionally, we have a feature called Here Now; where you can see on the leaderboard other Members who are riding in that on-demand class at the same time as you and give each other virtual high fives. Other social features include ‘Ride with Friends’. When you hop on your Bike, you’ll receive a notification on screen if a Member you follow is currently taking a class. Lastly, this year, we launched a new social feature called Tags. This enables Members to showcase their identities and connect with others in the community with shared interests by adding tags to their profile, for example #PelotonUK.

FC: What classes are available?

BA: Peloton has thousands of different classes across categories such as indoor cycling, running, walking, strength, stretching, cardio, yoga and meditation. I teach indoor cycling and there really is something for everyone, whether you’re a beginner or a more advanced rider. You can filter the classes based on the length of time you have available, the class type, the instructor you want to ride with and the music you’re feeling on that particular day whether that’s House, ‘90s, Hip Hop or Rock.

FC: What advice would you give when it comes to staying focussed and active?

BA: The most important thing is to set achievable goals. Don’t think about what you need to achieve in three weeks, instead, think about what you need to achieve in three months. Make major changes regularly (shake things up completely every couple of months to keep things fresh – new types of classes, target different muscle groups etc.) and minor changes often (shuffle the order of your workouts and add a new challenge to your weekly programme). Most of all find your community. The Peloton community is full of energetic and positive people who can help you stay committed to your goals.

FC: What do you love most about being an instructor?

BA: The community. Nothing beats the stories I read from Members who take my rides and how it’s had an impact – it is genuinely life changing – for them and for me.

FC: What’s your ultimate goal as an instructor, for everyone who joins your classes?

BA: My ultimate wish for everyone who joins my classes is for them to find the fun in fitness and to unleash their true potential. My workouts will be challenging, but achievable, testing those who take them both physically and mentally and inspiring them to build healthy habits for lifelong improvements.
