HEBRON – Tasty and healthy. That’s the mission of Alyssa Lower and her Alyssa’s Healthy Donuts.
“I never dreamed I would be making donuts or have my own business,” she said. “I had zero signs of the typical ‘entrepreneur spirit.’”
Lower grew up in Baltic, Ohio. After graduating from high school in 2013, she earned an associate of arts degree from COTC in 2015.
“I was never money focused, just people focused,” she noted. “When I was very young, I wanted to be Britney Spears. And in high school I thought I wanted to be a preschool teacher or therapist.”
“After I graduated from high school, I became interested in health and fitness,” she continued. “I was always involved in sports in high school, so I wanted to continue being active. Then I had a wonderful friend who was very knowledgeable about health and fitness who took me under her wing and taught me all she knew. That encounter then began an obsession with learning more and more about healthy eating and movement.”
Lower had her own personal training business for several years. Then in 2018 she started Alyssa’s Healthy Donuts.
“It was an unintentional and organic start-up,” she said with a laugh. “I started making these donuts for myself as a healthier alternative (I also made healthy pancakes, waffles, ice cream, cheesecake, etc.) and then I started bringing the donuts in for my personal training clients to celebrate their birthdays, engagements, etc. Then I had a class on Fridays called ‘Protein Donut Fridays.’”
“From posting our little donut celebrations on social media and word of mouth,” she continued, “our donuts slowly gained a reputation. Then on National Donut Day in 2018 I decided to take orders just for fun with zero intention or belief that it would continue after that. Now we’re here, running a donut business full-time!”
“I think her personality is what drew a lot of people in to begin with,” said repeat customer Kessashun Arthur. “She’s great. She’s such a personable person. She’s very positive.”
“Plus,” he added, “I’m a bit of a donut enthusiast. I’ve been to over 100 shops across the country, so I thought I’d give them a try – and I was really impressed. They’re delicious. I like donuts and I also like to take good care of myself, so this is the best of both worlds.”
Lower makes the donuts and runs the business with her mother, Debbie Lower. “Making healthy donuts with my daughter is probably one of the last things I ever thought I would be doing!” she said. “I love it though. And watching her grow the business is so exciting! And I love the donuts! They’re filling and provide you with a treat that’s a healthier option – and is also gluten free! They’re delicious!”
“I love nutrition,” Alyssa noted, “and I love providing a healthy, gluten-free alternative for people to enjoy.”
“But ultimately,” she added, “I just enjoy serving and loving people through the business. Having some kind of platform, whether it’s big or small, provides so many opportunities to facilitate beautiful things – to give back to the community or people in need, to be an example, to spread light, love and kindness, that’s what I love the most.”
“Life is a beautiful and messy journey,” she concluded, “and I wouldn’t change one thing about it.”
